I am not much for reading the local news, but every now and then I take a peek to see what’s going on. Well, today I had a look and found out that Waterloo is rejecting The Bay from building a wind turbine at the Conestoga Mall store.
The city counsel has cited safety and noise as their reasons for the rejection. Although their concerns may not be unfounded, I think an outright rejection like this is ludicrous. First off, the site for the wind turbine would be at a mall, which pretty much has only businesses nearby. There wouldn’t really be any residents to disturb… which makes for a weak argument on the noise front. The city of Toronto has a wind turbine at the Exhibition Place, smack in the middle of a large tourist area in the city. So obviously it is possible to make these things safe.
A much more appropriate answer the city should have given is either “maybe” or “let’s talk”. A city that is supposed to be so advanced technologically and intelligently to outright reject such strategic and important technology… it’s shameful.

This is great to hear and I congratulate the Bay on their success and for fighting the issue. [...]
