Cool things PI will miss out on…

So I have been noticing myself saying “man, that would be soo cool if Perimeter did that” a lot lately. Much of this is being spurred by what you probably don’t know. Perimeter Institute is in the process of getting funding for an expansion to their 31 Caroline St N location in Waterloo (I don’t know how long those links will be good… for the CFI link, go to https://www2.innovation.ca/pls/fci/moteurresen.base and search the “Notices of Intent for the Leading Edge and New Initiatives Funds 2009″ for Perimeter Institute). I thought I would share some. Unfortunately, most of these won’t see the light of day.

As many of you know, HBC’s The Bay recently installed wind turbines at their Waterloo location. I think it would be really awesome if Perimeter incorporated similar Green initiatives in the building expansion, whether it be wind turbines or solar panels. The Bay’s wind turbines are rumoured to be large enough to power the store, which I think is totally possible for PI.

I was in Toronto recently and saw OCAD’s Sharp Centre for Design. The first thing that popped into my head when I saw that building was “wow, that’s what Perimeter should be”. It’s amazing to see a building on stilts like that and makes your jaw drop in awe. Perimeter doesn’t do this for me; I just see yet another cement and glass building. Maybe I need an architect to convince me why Perimeter’s building is special as it is because I just don’t see it.

I had more to write, but I am just noticing the time is after 1am; I have to work tomorrow. Good night all.

Goodbye Conservative Minority, Hello Conservative Minority

Now that both CTV and CBC have both announced and declared the Conservative Minority, I am going to bed. So glad Canada spent hundreds of millions of dollars to call an election for nothing.

More money to Bell?

I don’t really have time to find external links, so I leave this as an exercise to the reader.

Didn’t we already give Bell a whack of money to implement broadband to all Canadians? We need to enforce that they provide broadband internet to rural areas, NOT give Bell more money intended for rural broadband which will just be wasted away again. IIRC, the CRTC is subsidising Bell’s infrastructure costs and requiring them to provide the GAS (Gateway Access Service) to their ADSL competition. Bell still refuses to provide access to many areas until the residents can prove there is enough guarantee of profit for it to be worthwhile for Bell. Why are they being allowed to use subsidised funds in this way Mr Harper?

Canada has already given satellite providers money to launch satellites intended to provide internet access to the territories up North. IIRC, original programs in this initiative were abused to sell internet and TV access to other countries as it was more profitable.

Harper to re-introduce C-61 copyright reform

Hat tip to Saskboy’s post which reminded me to post about this.

A couple days ago I read on CBC that Harper plans to re-introduce his copyright reform if he’s elected. Harper claims that his legislation “strikes the appropriate balance among the rights of musicians, artists, programmers and other creators and brings Canada’s intellectual property protection in line with that of other industrialized countries, but also protects consumers who want to access copyright works for their personal use.” This is not what bill C-61 did and Canadians made that clear to Harper over the summer. Why does Harper want to bring this back to the table and take away Canadians’ digital rights?

Don’t let Harper’s Conservatives into Ottawa again; protect your digital freedom!

Conservative mis-information

When I woke up to the radio this morning I heard quite the interesting Conservative attack ad. Harper’s ad was attacking Dion directly. The ad attacked the environmental levies that the Liberals have proposed in connection to the recent economic turmoil which Harper’s government has failed to do anything about. The ad complained of more taxes and that taxes are the last thing Canada needs right now.

What the ad failed to mention is all of the income tax breaks that the Liberals are suggesting. ALL of the imposed taxes will be offset by tax cuts. I urge you to go to thegreenshift.ca and learn for yourself the proposed Liberal plan. Don’t listen to Harper’s lies.

Harper: Mike Harris Conservative

Do you remember the last election when Harper was quoted saying that “The best place to look for a model for how Canada would be governed is Ontario under Mike Harris.”?

This is the same Harris that was in power when the Ministry of Health failed to properly test Walkerton’s water supply. Seven died and hundreds became ill because they failed to discover that the water was contaminated with E.Coli.

This is the same Harris government that was responsible for the cold shooting of Ipperwash Indian Dudley George of which Harris was quoted saying “I want the fucking Indians out of the park”.

This is the same Harris who laid off hundreds of nurses and closed hospitals as a cost saving measure, to which we are hurting now for the vast doctor and healthcare shortages in the province.

This is who Harper wants to be. This is what he wants to do to Canada. Do you really want to let Harper back into parliament??

Is the economy sound or not, Mr Harper??

Harper recently told Canada that we are economically sound. He told Canadians that “Canada is not the United States” when trying to explain that the US crisis would not have a big lasting effect on Canada.

Today, news was released that Canada is headed for a bad recession, lasting until potentially 2010.

Today, Harper is saying “We’re not an island” and touting that we should have expected this to happen. He is proposing a buyout plan should he get elected. It was obvious to most Canadians this would happen almost a month ago. Why is Harper flip-flopping? Is the economy sound or not Mr Harper??

McCain 4 Prime Minister??

“The fundamentals of our economy are strong.” – John McCain, Sept 15, Black Monday.

“The fundamentals of our economy are strong.” – Steven Harper, Oct 1, translated from the French debates.

Harper continued to re-emphasise his position on the economy on Oct 2 during the English debates. If this is so true, then why Harper, why did the TSX have it’s biggest drop since the 2000 bust on Oct 3?

Why bother electing Harper for Prime Minister? It’s obvious he’s just going to mindlessly copy everything McCain does anyways. Might as well elect McCain in Canada!

Vote strategically if you can

The more time that goes on in this election, the more I don’t want the conservatives in power. If you are like me and don’t want the Conservatives to win anything more than a minority, then there are ways you can vote strategically. There are websites, such as http://www.voteforenvironment.ca/ that will tell you if your riding is in close range to winning with one of the other parties, such as NDP, Liberal, or Green. You can then vote for the highest non-conservative party that has the best chance of winning in your riding. If the conservatives have no chance of winning in your riding, you can vote for who you would have in the first place.

Let’s keep mini-McCain out of power!
